Cozad's older residential streets run in a tight grid a few blocks off the highway, lined with trees tall enough to have shaded these same front yards long before this block ever needed a plow, and by midwinter their bare branches leave the sidewalks below in a patchwork of shade and sun that never melts evenly. Buss Landscaping works those neighborhood blocks, plowing driveways and shoveling walks through the same yards it mows every summer, clearing the paths at the city park where the swing sets sit still and rimed with frost until spring. A Dawson County storm can bury a driveway overnight and leave the next morning bright and windless, the kind of cold, clear day that makes snow squeak underfoot on a shoveled walk. The crew salts the steps out front and whatever stretch of sidewalk the sun never reaches through a Cozad winter, working through the neighborhood until it's passable again.
