Long before most of Columbus is awake, U & I Sanitation is already working the alleys behind downtown's storefronts and the loading docks out past the rail yard, the same routes it runs on trash day now doubling as snow routes so a truck can still reach every dumpster pad in town. Winter turns those narrow alleyways into the hardest ground in Columbus to keep clear, boxed in by buildings that hold shade and cold long after the open streets nearby have started to bare down in the sun. The crew plows commercial lots and the drives behind Platte County businesses first, since a blocked alley on a snow day means a missed pickup as much as a hazard underfoot, then works out to the residential driveways along its regular routes. Sidewalks in front of the businesses it serves are cleared and salted that same morning, so employees and customers aren't stepping over a curb of packed snow to get in the door. It's a route built for function over show, clearing the parts of Columbus that keep the town running behind the scenes.
