Chadron sits where the high plains buckle upward into the Pine Ridge, and on a winter morning the ponderosa pines above town hold their snow in a way the open prairie never does, bending under the weight until a hard wind or a warm hour finally shakes it loose. Chadrons Arbor Barber keeps the streets below those bluffs plowed and shoveled, working driveway and front walk alike while Chadron State Park's buttes stand white against a low sky just south of town. The Pine Ridge traps cold air in its draws and canyons, so a driveway in one part of Chadron can hold ice for days after a sunny stretch has cleared the flats along the highway. The crew works the sidewalks downtown and out toward Chadron State College early, before students and staff need a clear path across a still-dark campus. The work has less to do with any one storm than with staying ahead of the drifts those bluffs keep piling against the same doors, week after week.
