Long before Central City took its name, wagon trains on the old trail west marked their way by a single cottonwood standing alone against the Platte River flats -- the town was called Lone Tree for it, and that same open valley still catches the first hard freeze of the season before almost anywhere else in Merrick County. Brandenburg Tree and Lawn LLC works those cold mornings on Highway 30 and the side streets running off it, plowing driveways before the school buses move and shoveling walks clear while the frost is still silver on the grass. Storms here come flat and fast across the valley, with little to break the wind between the river and the rooftops, so a driveway can drift shut twice in one afternoon. The crew keeps at it anyway, working until every path they've cleared holds a clean, square edge against the snowbank. There's a particular satisfaction in a Merrick County driveway scraped down to bare concrete under a sky still bruised with the next system building over the Sandhills to the north.
