Oakland keeps a giant Dala horse painted red and gold at the edge of town, a nod to the Swedish families who settled this stretch of Burt County farmland, and every winter storm tests the windbreaks and shelterbelts those families planted along their fields decades back. Cjs Tree Service spends most of its year among those same trees — trimming limbs, clearing storm damage, keeping the rows that break the wind for fields and farmyards in shape — so when snow piles up instead of leaves, the same trucks and the same eye for a property turn from branches to driveways. A shelterbelt does its job in a storm, catching drifts before they reach the house, but that just means the snow still has to be moved from wherever the trees pushed it. Logan Creek runs quiet and half-frozen through the low ground near town on a January morning, and the farmsteads scattered along it need a cleared lane to the road as much as any shop in Oakland does. Cjs Tree Service clears driveways and yards around Oakland, treating the ground with the same patient attention it gives the trees standing over it.
