East Lawn Cemetery

About East Lawn Cemetery

Late August on the south-central Nebraska plains brings thunderheads stacking up in the west and cicadas droning from the shade trees of Bladen. East Lawn Cemetery is tended with lawn care straight through the long heat, the grass held at one steady height so every name on every marker stays in plain sight. There's a rhythm to it: the same loops week after week while the wheat stubble bleaches pale beyond town and the storms grumble past to the north. When the heat breaks near sundown, fresh stripes in the turf show just how carefully the place is kept. It is steady, faithful work for a village that remembers its own.
