The old elevator still stands over Bennington's Main Street, and against a winter sunset it turns into a dark shape against a sky that goes orange and then purple faster out here than it seems to anywhere closer to Omaha. Jensen Brothers Mowing finishes its snow routes in that light, working the last few driveways on the original townsite as the day's color drains out over the fields to the west. The old part of town sits close to the tracks and the grain trade that built it, narrow lots and short driveways that clear fast once the crew gets to them. It's a contrast to the newer streets on the edge of town, wider and slower to work through, so the old Main Street block often ends up the last stop of the day rather than the first. By full dark, the elevator's silhouette stands over a town that's bare from the tracks to the last new cul-de-sac, whatever hour each part got its turn.
