The sod fields Blue Valley Sod grows along the bends of the Big Blue River outside Beatrice spend winter under a blanket of snow instead of the green rolls cut and hauled out come spring and summer. That same low river ground collects cold air and holds onto snow longer than the higher fields around it, so the company's own yard is often one of the last things nearby to clear on its own. Rather than wait it out, the crew works it early, plowing its own yard first and then the properties of the customers it grows sod for come summer, using the same flatbeds that haul pallets most other months. The Big Blue itself runs low and slow through this stretch, mostly hidden under ice by January, a quiet backdrop to trucks working the lot in the dark before sunrise. It's ground that gives one crop in summer and, apparently, one more kind of work in winter.
