Battle Creek takes its name from the stream that still threads past its western edge on the way toward the Elkhorn, and in winter that low ground holds cold air and fog longer than the fields above it. Seifert Construction's yard sits up out of that bottom, full of the graders and loaders it uses to build roads and foundations the rest of the year, and those same machines take on a season of plowing once snow starts stacking up on Madison County roads. The village itself is small enough to clear block by block, but the real distance is in the farm lanes running out toward Norfolk and Madison, where a single drift can cut a place off from the highway for a day if nobody comes through with a blade. Clearing those lanes first, ahead of the village streets, is just how priorities shake out here. It's construction-grade equipment doing a winter job it was never designed for, and doing it well because the operators already know every curve in these roads.
