North and west of Atkinson the blacktop gives out and the road turns to packed sand and grass — the first real edge of the Sandhills, where the ground rolls rather than sits flat. Hamik Innovations works right along that seam, adapting whatever equipment a job calls for, and in winter it means fitting plows onto machines built for entirely different tasks the other nine months. Snow out here behaves differently than in flatter country: it drifts into the swales between the dunes and leaves the ridges nearly bare, so clearing a lane means working the low spots twice and the high spots hardly at all. It's a puzzle particular to this stretch of Holt County, one this outfit seems built to solve by tinkering until the equipment fits the ground. Clearing a lane out here often means thinking about the wind before ever lowering the blade.
