Alma sits above the Republican River not far from Harlan County Lake, close enough that winter wind off the reservoir can push snow sideways across town long after the storm itself has moved on. J & LK-Lawn Inc clears driveways and walkways through that wind, working the bluffs and river-bottom streets where drifts pile differently depending on which side of a hill a house sits on. The lake ices over most winters, a wide gray sheet visible from the higher parts of town, and mornings here can be still enough that the only sound for blocks is a plow scraping down to pavement. It's a small town's worth of driveways, cleared one at a time, so people can get down to the highway or out to the lake road without spinning tires on packed snow. By midmorning, most of Alma sits quiet and clear under whatever sun the day has to offer.
