Lake Sakakawea stretches out west and south of Williston, frozen solid enough by midwinter that the wind off its open surface arrives in town with nothing left to slow it down. Mr Bradden's Services works driveways and lots on the sides of town that catch that lake wind hardest, where a plowed driveway can be re-drifted within an hour of a hard gust off the water. The lake's flat, wind-scoured ice makes for a strange stillness on a windless day, but the storms that roll off it are anything but, dropping visibility to almost nothing along the roads closest to the shoreline. This crew treats those exposed properties as their first stop after a storm, working inward toward the calmer, more sheltered streets near the center of Williston once the worst of the drifting has settled. A driveway cleared on the lake side of town rarely stays clear as long as one two miles closer to downtown.
