The Red River Valley around Thompson is some of the flattest, most heavily farmed ground in the state, black soil that grows sugar beets thick every summer and holds not a single hill to slow a January wind, and New Earth LLC plows through that same flat openness all winter long. Drainage ditches lace the valley in straight lines, laid out to move meltwater off ground this level, and those same lines fill first with snow once a storm passes through. New Earth LLC works the driveways and lots along Thompson's grid, laid out square to match the section survey the valley was platted into more than a century ago. A valley storm doesn't announce itself with hills or breaks in the land; the snow just arrives, flat and even, and gets pushed along the same straight lines the roads themselves already run. A few miles up the interstate, Grand Forks glows against the night sky, but Thompson keeps its own smaller routes clear on its own schedule. By morning, the lots sit dark and open against valley snow that stretches unbroken to every horizon.
