Rolla's streets roll more than most North Dakota towns, laid over the low rises that mark the southern edge of the Turtle Mountains, and Laducer Sanitation Inc runs its plow routes up and down that grade every storm. A hill that goes unnoticed in July becomes the first thing to clear in December, since packed snow on a slope stops a car faster than the same snow ever would on level ground. Laducer Sanitation Inc works the residential streets and lots in a set order, low blocks first where drifts collect at the bottom of each rise, then the higher streets where wind keeps things thinner. Routes finish before the school buses need the roads, the same streets that lead out past St. John and toward Dunseith once they clear the edge of town. A hilly town asks something different of winter work than flat country does, and Rolla's rolling blocks get it, storm after storm. By first light, the grades into town sit open and the low spots are banked back far enough to drain when the next thaw comes.
