The road out toward Sawyer and Velva runs long and straight, and on a hot afternoon the wind crosses it steady enough to lean on. JL LawnCare works a route through Minot and those small towns, one yard after another — gravel drives, shade trees, and grass fighting for every inch in August. Out here a lawn is a deliberate thing: somebody waters it, somebody cuts it, and the prairie waits patiently to take it back. So it gets mowed on time, trimmed at the posts and the propane tank, and swept off the sidewalk before the truck rolls on. Down the road the next one is waiting, and by evening a whole string of them looks sharp.
