The Goose River threads through Mayville on its way to the Red River valley floor, and the neighborhoods that sit closest to its banks are where Jacobson Brothers starts each snow run, clearing driveways before the walk to the footbridge gets slick. The valley here is flat enough that a storm can drop snow evenly across every yard, so the brothers split the route in half and work opposite ends of town toward the middle. Driveways get plowed from garage to street, the pile set back far enough that a car door will still open without scraping snow. Sidewalks along the older blocks get shoveled by hand, since the sidewalks here run narrow and close to the curb. Ice by the river crossing gets extra salt, since that low ground holds cold longer than the rest of town. By midmorning the two routes meet back near downtown, the whole town cleared block by block instead of street by street.
