South of Mandan, the Heart River bends toward the Missouri near the bluffs of Fort Lincoln, and the neighborhoods that back up to that country are where Chris & Sons LLC does its quietest work, plowing driveways while the rest of the street is still asleep. The two of them split a route between them, one clearing the cul-de-sacs, the other working the longer driveways that back onto open land. Snow gets pushed clear of mailboxes and hydrants, not just piled at the end of a driveway to freeze into a wall. Walkways get a second pass with a shovel for the parts a blade cannot reach. By midmorning the trucks meet back at the highway, the work behind them instead of ahead. It is a small operation built around getting two routes done before the town fully wakes up.
