The crew moves door to door along the block, then out to the side streets where porches and back steps need the same close attention. Snowblowers handle the wide stretches; shovels finish the corners a machine cannot reach cleanly. A stubborn patch of ice by a mail slot or a step gets salt worked into it by hand. Once the block is clear, the crew swings out to the newer streets on the edge of town, where driveways run long and the wind has its own ideas about where the snow should sit. The result is a town you can walk across without watching every step.
