Lisbon calls itself the gateway to Fort Ransom, and the road north out of town follows the Sheyenne River through valley-bottom farmland before it climbs toward Fort Ransom and the state park beyond. Dirt Boss plows that gateway stretch along with the ordinary driveways and lots inside town, working ground that shifts from open river bottom to wooded valley slope inside just a few miles. Snow settles differently in that bottomland than it does on the flat farm country farther out — the trees along the river break the wind enough that drifts stay shallower near the water, while the open fields just beyond the treeline pile up fast. The crew tracks that change mile by mile on the route north, clearing farm approaches through the bottomland before working back into Lisbon's own residential streets. Fog often sits low over the river on those mornings, the valley slopes above already bright with new snow by the time the gateway stretch is clear and the rest of the day's route can start.
