Lincoln is one of the younger towns in this stretch of the Missouri River country, its curving subdivision streets laid out well after most of the farms around it were already generations old, and BSMN Lawn Care works those same new streets once winter takes over from the lawns it tends the rest of the year. A newer subdivision drifts differently than an established one — fewer mature trees to break the wind, fresher pavement that holds the cold a little harder — so driveways here can ice up fast once the sun goes down on a clear night. The crew runs its plow route early, before commuters start the short drive north into Bismarck for the day, clearing driveway aprons and walks street by street through the curving blocks. Where a fence or a young sapling hasn't grown enough yet to slow the wind, the drifts pile deeper at the mouth of the driveway than anywhere else on the lot, and that's where the second pass usually goes. Some of these curving streets are barely older than the trucks clearing them, empty lots still waiting between the houses, one driveway plowed at a time through a town that's still filling itself in.
