By afternoon, when the low winter sun finally clears the bare elm and ash lining Jamestown's older residential streets, Z's Trees is usually still out working the driveways those same trees shade all summer. The bare branches do at least one favor in winter: they let the wind push snow through instead of trapping it, so these blocks often drift lighter than the open lots on the edge of town, and the crew reads that difference street by street. Even so, the tree roots buckle some of the older sidewalks just enough that a plow blade has to lift and set carefully rather than run straight through. Later stops in the day tend to be smaller residential jobs, driveways and walks for people just getting home from work, the light already going gold and low across the yards. Porch lights are usually just starting to come on down the block by the time this last stretch gets finished, the day's route ending the same unhurried way it went all afternoon.
