On the southern bluffs of Jamestown, where the old State Hospital campus spreads its brick wards and utility buildings across the rim overlooking town, Steck's Property Preservation LLC keeps the walks between those buildings clear through the winter along with its usual list of vacant and occupied properties. Property preservation work means showing up whether or not anyone's watching, so a seldom-used walk between two utility buildings gets the same full clearing as a front step with the porch light burning. Wind off the bluff there settles snow into long drifts along the building faces, deeper than it ever gets on the flatter streets below in town, so those particular stretches take a slower, more careful pass. Down in town proper the same crew handles ordinary occupied houses, driveways and sidewalks in the regular rotation, the work plainer without a hilltop wind to fight. A walk kept open all winter between buildings most people never have reason to pass is still cleared street-width and full length, same as any porch step in town with someone waiting behind the door.
