About Scherbenske Inc

East of Jamestown the land breaks into prairie pothole wetlands, shallow marshes and sloughs that freeze over black and hold geese by the thousand before they finally clear out for the season. Scherbenske Inc plows the section roads and farmstead driveways out through that country, where a single quarter-mile lane can drift shut overnight with nothing around to break the wind. The work out there is patient and a little solitary — one long push down a lane with open fields on both sides, snow banked into low ridges along the ditch, geese sometimes lifting off a pothole at the sound of the engine. Back in town the same equipment handles smaller residential and commercial jobs, the scale different but the blade set the same. A cleared section road running straight out into that flat, marshy country is its own kind of quiet reward, especially with the first grey light of morning still low over the sloughs.
