Out at the southeast edge of Jamestown, where the concrete bison stands twenty-six feet over Frontier Village and the museum's own small herd beds down in the cold, Jamestown Tree Service starts its winter route before the gates open for the day. The lots and access roads around the museum grounds take a different kind of storm than the neighborhoods closer in — wider aprons, longer stretches, snow that the wind piles against the log buildings overnight. The crew clears it in wide, even passes, backing the blade off short of the old pioneer fencing so nothing gets nicked in the low light. Farther into town, the same trucks work ordinary driveways and sidewalks block by block, the routine plainer but no less steady. It is a strange kind of morning commute, plowing past a giant buffalo before the sun even clears the museum's own fence line.
