The Knife River cuts a shallow green valley through Hazen in summer, the kind of bottomland grass that stays lush even when the bluffs above it turn brown and dry by August. That same ground disappears under two feet of drifted snow by December, and Grass and Snow Services works that half of the year, clearing driveways and lots block by block as the season demands. Mercer County winters carry a particular kind of cold, dry and wind-driven off the bluffs that pen in the river, the kind that piles snow into hard, sculpted drifts rather than soft ones. The crew reads those drifts the way a rancher might read a windbreak, working with the shape the land and weather have already made rather than against it. Come spring, the same ground goes green again, like the whole season in between was just a long, cold pause.
