Grand Forks sits on the floor of an old glacial lake, which is why the ground lies so level and the soil runs so heavy and black — grass grows thick here when somebody tends it. The Grass Guys mow into that, working the yards off DeMers Avenue and the shaded blocks near University Park, trimming close around cottonwood trunks and fence posts where a mower can't reach. September afternoons are the good ones: cooler air off the river, the light going amber, machines running until the last lawn is squared away. The reward is the ordinary kind — grass at an even height, an edge cut sharp, a sidewalk swept, a homeowner pulling in to a place that looks looked-after. That is the whole of the job, and they like doing it properly.
