The Snow Squad

About The Snow Squad

North Fargo still runs along the old rail line that first platted this town, numbered avenues running parallel to the tracks in a grid that has barely changed since, and a hard storm can bury every one of those blocks at once. The Snow Squad splits a crew across that grid rather than working it end to end, several trucks moving block by block in parallel so no one street sits buried longer than the rest while the crew clears the others. On ground this flat, a storm does not favor one neighborhood over the next — the same wind that drifts in against a garage door on 12th Street North does the same on 20th — so covering the whole grid at once instead of in a slow line is the only way to keep pace with it. By the time the last truck finishes its assigned blocks, the whole north side sits open again, ready for whatever the valley sends next.
