The Red River runs north out of Fargo, an odd enough direction that people here still mention it, curling past Lindenwood Park and the older homes built close along its bank before winter locks the whole channel under ice. Manny's Lawn & Snow clears the driveways and walks through those riverside blocks, where the ground stays a little colder and the drifts a little deeper in the shade of the cottonwoods lining the water. A river that floods every spring earns its winter stillness, ice thick enough to walk on where canoes passed in July, and the driveways above it need clearing on the same schedule as anywhere else in the valley regardless of the view. There is something satisfying about a plowed lane running down toward that frozen river, bare ground cut into the snow, a path kept open through a season the water itself spends resting.
