Broadway still carries the marquee of the old Fargo Theatre and a run of brick storefronts built along the town's original main street, and the merchants there need the sidewalk clear before the first customer tries the door. Fargo Snow Removal works that stretch of downtown in the dark hours before opening, plowing the small lots behind the buildings and clearing walks the length of Broadway and the cross streets running down toward the river. The valley here is wind-open ground with almost nothing tall enough to break a gust downtown, so a storm can pile snow against one side of a building and leave the other bare, and the work is as much reading the wind as clearing the ground. By the time the theatre marquee lights up again in the evening, the same stretch of sidewalk has usually been cleared twice — once before dawn, once after the afternoon commute redrew the drifts.
