About Schmitz Inc.

Just beside Emerado, the airfield lights of Grand Forks Air Force Base glow across the snowfields before dawn, and the town wakes early to match. Schmitz Inc. gets to work on Emerado's snow in the cold dark, so driveways and walks are open before the morning drive to work. On the coldest nights the air goes so still that snow squeaks underfoot and pillars of light rise straight up from the streetlamps. The work is about steadiness, pass after pass until each drive is clear and its edges stand straight. The quiet payoff comes when headlights back out of a freshly cleared driveway onto an open road.
