On the west edge of Dickinson, Patterson Lake freezes into a plain white sheet ringed by the same buttes that mark the start of badlands country, and the houses built along its shore spend the winter looking out at ice instead of open water. Koepplin Construction clears those lakeside driveways and the streets looping back toward town, working through the low grey light of a high-plains morning when the sun barely clears the bluffs before ten. Snow out here rarely falls straight down; it comes sideways off open ground, drifting hard against anything that breaks the wind, so a driveway can need a second pass before the first one has even set. There is a particular pleasure in getting there before the drift sets up hard, in a lane cut clean while the light is still low and the lake still holds its ice. It is work timed to a place where winter is mostly about wind, and the plow is the plain answer to it.
