Burlington sits where the Des Lacs River slides in to meet the Souris, and for a few weeks in May the valley goes from brown to green so fast you can almost watch it happen. Birdy's Landscaping and Hydro Mulching works inside that turn — hydro mulching bare ground on a raw bank until the slope knits together and holds, then keeping the yards up on the flat mowed, trimmed and edged against a wind that never really quits out here. A coulee bank sprayed in the morning and misted green ten days later is its own small argument that this soil wants to grow things. Up on the townsite the work is plainer and just as particular: a clean line where turf meets gravel, clippings off the walk, the drive swept before the truck pulls away. Two rivers, one small town, and a lot of ground worth putting right.
