The lake cabins scattered along the shorelines outside Bottineau go quiet once the docks come out for the season, but LakeShore Lawns keeps its trucks moving through the wooded hills of the Turtle Mountains long after the last boat's been hauled to storage. This is different country than the open prairie most of North Dakota runs on — hills, timber, lake basins that hold snow in ways flat farmland never does, drifting deep in the low spots between ridges. Driveways here wind through trees instead of running straight from road to garage, which means more turns, more careful blade work around trunks that never get cut back for a plow's convenience. Down in town, the same crew clears the more ordinary streets and walkways that don't have a lake view to speak of. Either way, the work follows the same hills and hollows that make this corner of the state look nothing like the rest of it.
