On the streets near Custer Park, the school bus runs early enough that Thompson Snow has to be finished well before it does, cutting a path down driveways so kids aren't wading through a foot of overnight snow to catch it. It's residential work, mostly — the kind where a crew gets to know a street by its driveways rather than its street sign, learning which ones slope wrong and drift deep and which stay clear on their own. A plain name for a plain job: snow moved off driveways and walks before the neighborhood needs to be anywhere. The park itself goes still and white for months at a time, its trails packed down by dog walkers rather than plows, while the surrounding blocks get the same routine treatment each time snow piles up. By the time that bus rounds the corner, the driveways along its route are already bare.
