A sanitation route runs on a fixed schedule no matter what the sky is doing, and in Beulah that means J & S trucks are often the first thing moving on a residential street after an overnight snow. Before the collection route can run, the alleys and curb lines have to be passable, so plowing becomes the quiet first step in a morning that most of the town sleeps through. The work follows the same grid the garbage trucks follow every week, driveways and curb cuts cleared block by block so nothing gets missed and nothing gets left for a truck to get stuck against. Beulah's winter mornings can be still and hard-cold or blowing sideways off the open land past the grain elevator, and either way the route has to open on time. It's plowing done in service of a schedule that doesn't bend for weather, which makes the timing as much the job as the snow itself.
