By late November the willow oaks along the old Winston-Salem streets have given up all at once, and a yard can go from kept to buried inside a week. Yards By D France meets the leaves head-on — raking and blowing out beds and fence lines, clearing the turf, hauling the whole load away, then putting the yard down for winter with a last cut, fresh mulch and clean edges. Mowing, edging and trimming carry the rest of the calendar, but this is the season that asks the most and shows the most. One hour earns the day: about four in the afternoon this time of year, the sun coming in low over the Bethabara woods, the ground bare and swept, the yard looking the way it looked in April.
