Let It Grow

About Let It Grow

At two in the morning the back roads out of the creek bottom are the only thing moving — plow lights swinging across mailboxes and pine trunks, everything else asleep under a few new inches. Let It Grow runs the winter routes through those hours, opening driveways and parking areas, breaking the ridge of snow the county plow leaves at the end of a lane, and salting where the walk meets the step. Out here the road can be clear while the driveway is still impossible, and that last hundred feet is what decides a person's morning. The truck goes place to place until the sky turns gray, then starts again on the ones the wind has filled back in. Nobody is awake to watch it, which is the idea.
