Hoopers Grading

About Hoopers Grading

Winter arrives in Whittier the way the Tuckasegee does — following the valley floor, unhurried, until it isn't. One night the cloud drops onto the ridgelines, and by morning the gravel drives that climb away from the river are white and unbroken. Hoopers Grading is a snow removal outfit that meets those mornings early, plowing the long approaches, opening the turnarounds, laying salt where the shade holds ice past noon. There is a particular satisfaction in a Smoky Mountain driveway cleared to its shoulders while fog is still lifting off the water. That is the whole of it: a road home that stays open, whatever the mountain decides overnight.
