Mount Jefferson stands over the town with the storefront murals at its feet, and by January those painted walls have a foot of white banked at the curb in front of them. High Country Home and Land Services plows and clears through Ashe County winters — driveways, farm lanes, parking areas, whatever has to open before a day can start. Weather arrives here from the northwest with no warm valley to soften it, and it can snow sideways for hours out of a sky that looks nearly clear. Blade down at two in the morning, truck lights turn the flakes into something like sparks. By breakfast the drives are black and wet and the town goes about its business.
