Anson County winters run more brown than white — dormant fescue, bare pecan limbs, the red banks along Brown Creek showing through where the leaves are down. Pinkston's, Inc. uses that stretch for work you can only see in the cold: beds cleared, growth cut back, borders reestablished along drives and walks. Come April the mowing starts up again and does not stop until frost, week over week across Wadesboro and out along the farm roads toward Lilesville. A lawn kept on schedule reads differently than one rescued in June. Both are worth doing, but the first one is the aim.
