Toward Boardman the Lumber River slides along tea-dark and unhurried beneath the cypress, and when spring finally turns the bottomland green it seems to happen overnight. That is when HUERTAS CONSTRUCTION begins the first cuts of the year around Tatums: mowing, edging, string trimming the fence lines, hauling off the winter litter of limbs and leaves. A first mow is a kind of announcement, the yard is back, the borders are sharp again, and the whole season has somewhere to start. Sandy coastal-plain soil drains fast after a rain here, which makes the early morning the best window to be on the grass. From there the rhythm holds straight through to the far end of summer.
