By November the wind coming off the ridges above Spruce Pine has an edge to it, and the oaks let go of everything they have been holding since spring. Hillbilly Lawncare spends those weeks on leaf work — blowing out fence corners and the backs of beds, gathering, hauling, then cutting the grass one final time before the ground hardens. The rest of the year the routine holds steady: mowing, string trimming, edging along the gravel and stone that make up half the drives up here. Hollows fill with fog most mornings and burn clear by midday, which sets the working hours whether a man likes it or not. There is something plain and right about handing a yard back in the fall, swept down to the grass and ready for the cold.
