Fog sits in the South Toe valley most summer mornings until the sun clears the Black Mountains and lifts it off the pastures in one slow sheet. Leyva's Yard & Lawn Care Service starts once the dew burns away — mowing the river-bottom yards and the ones climbing the bank behind them, trimming where the laurel crowds in, edging the walks, carrying the cuttings off. Mountain grass grows hard in July up here, fed by cold water and the rain that comes over the ridge most afternoons by four. Finishing a yard just ahead of that rain, lines laid even and the borders cut close, is about as good as a day gets. Yancey County keeps its own hours, and this work keeps them right along with it.
