Saluda sits at the top of the steepest mainline railroad grade in the country, and everything up here — weather, water, work — is shaped by that climb. Allman Land Works keeps ground in order at both ends of the year: mowing, edging and trimming through the green months, cleanups and leaf removal when the ridges turn, then plowing, shoveling and de-icing once winter finds the mountain first. At two thousand feet the frost hangs on in shaded curves long after the valley below has thawed, which makes an open driveway up here worth more than it is anywhere flat. A lawn cut clean in July and a drive cleared by daybreak in January are the same job in different weather. Serving Saluda, Tryon, Columbus, Zirconia and Flat Rock.
