Verde-Cal

About Verde-Cal

October in Rocky Mount lights up the old brick: the tobacco-era warehouses and factory buildings downtown, many of them given new lives, glow red-orange as the sun drops. Verde-Cal carries green right in its name, and green is what it keeps in the town's yards as summer gives way to fall. Autumn is when a lawn reveals how it was looked after all season, whether the borders held their shape and whether the turf stayed thick under the heat. Verde-Cal works toward that late-year reward, with grass mowed low and even beneath the falling leaves and the trim lines sharp against the first scattered color. It is a fine feeling to walk a finished yard while, across town, the old brick catches the last of the light.
