Old Fort sits at the foot of the escarpment, where the mountains stand straight up behind the town, and on a cold spring morning the piles steam while the trucks warm up. Asheville Mulch Yard (Old Fort) supplies and spreads the ground materials these yards run on: hardwood and colored mulch, compost and topsoil, gravel and river rock, delivered by the load or installed in the beds. Mountain rain moves fast downhill, and a properly dressed bed holds soil where it belongs instead of sending it to the creek. There is real pleasure in a fresh bed line against dark mulch with the ridge behind it still winter-bare. From here the loads go out toward Marion, Black Mountain and up the grade.
