Ember Keepers Chimney and Fireplace

About Ember Keepers Chimney and Fireplace

Newland stands high — better than three thousand feet, with Grandfather Mountain over one shoulder and the Toe River gathering itself somewhere near town. Winter is no occasional guest up here; it comes in on a northwest wind and keeps coming, an inch at a time, for days together. Ember Keepers Chimney and Fireplace clears through it: plowing driveways, opening walkways and steps, and treating the packed places that refuse to give up in the shade. On a mountain drive the snow is only half the trouble — the grade and what hides under it are the rest. The measure of the work is somebody getting down to the highway on a morning the whole ridge is white.
