The soil here is red, that Piedmont clay that stains a boot and holds a shovel where you put it. In April, when the dogwoods break open along the side streets of Mount Airy, Chilton Lawn Care and Landscaping is cutting fresh edges into the beds and laying mulch dark against new green. The rest of the year runs on mowing and trimming, shrubs kept in shape, leaves moved out of the borders before they mat down.
