Late in an October afternoon the ridges above Kings Creek go gold and the air turns sharp enough to work in all day without stopping. Islas Yard Services takes the yards tucked along those foothill roads between here and Lenoir — pockets of grass carved out of oak and laurel, with the mountains standing close on every side. Mowing, string trimming, edging, leaf clearing and hauling brush out of the corners where it collects. Small mountain lots reward patience: the trimmer does as much of the finishing as the mower does. The reward is a clean line where the lawn meets the woods, and a yard that looks deliberate against all that steep, unruly ground.
