You hear the South Fork before you see it in High Shoals, water breaking white over the ledges below the old mill village. Redline Outdoor Company mows the streets that grew up around that water — mill houses with deep front yards, newer lots out toward the county road, riverbank grass that comes on twice as fast in July. Piedmont summers here are heavy and green and give a lawn about five days before it wants attention again. Edges get cut sharp along the sidewalks, clippings blown off the concrete, and the whole block reads as cared for. Late in the day the shoals push a little cool air uphill, and it is a good time to stand and look back at the work.
